Honoring A Matriarch: Wintry Extended Family Session
Last January, I had the privilege of photographing an extended family session centered around a beloved matriarch, Cynthia. It was more than a family get together. It was an appreciation for what their family had grown into.
We met at Woodlawn in Ellsworth, where fresh snow covered the historic estate and transformed the landscape into a quiet winter scene. The grounds felt peaceful and still. Though the temperatures were brisk, the setting was perfect for encouraging a snuggly session.
This session wasn’t rushed. It felt steady and meaningful, brushing snow from pants, siblings reconnecting between frames, grandchildren running around Cynthia with easy familiarity. You could see the history there, not just in years but in the comfort of being together.
At the center of it all was Cynthia, surrounded, supported, and cherished. Photographing her with her children and grandchildren felt significant, especially when it was confessed they had never really done a big family session like this before. These weren’t just images for today; they were family moments frozen in time.
The snow eventually melted. Will it melt this winter? That is yet to be seen. But the photographs remain, a January day in Maine, generations gathered, and a matriarch at the heart of it all.
